Subwavelength Surface Plasmon Optical Cavity—Scaling, Amplification, and Coherence

چکیده
Scaling, coherence, and amplification of a subwavelength surface plasmon micropillar optical cavity have been studied using 3-D finite-difference time-domain calculations. Two experiments have also been conducted for the demonstration of the gain-assisted propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in a planar metal–semiconductor waveguide and the enhancement of the cavity-Q factor in a subwavelength surface plasmon micropillar cavity.

Plasmonic Fabry-Pérot nanocavity.
We experimentally demonstrate a novel, all-plasmonic nanoscopic cavity exhibiting Q-factors up to 200 at visible frequencies. The Fabry-Pérot type resonator uses tall metallic fins that reflect up to 98% of incident surface plasmon to concentrate light within a subwavelength cavity mode. High aspect ratio metal fins, constructed using lithography and electroplating, reduce surface plasmon scatt...

Simulations are presented that demonstrate that the global state of spatial coherence of an optical wavefield can be altered on transmission through an array of subwavelength-sized holes in a metal plate that supports surface plasmons. It is found that the state of coherence of the emergent field strongly depends on the separation between the holes and their scattering strength. Our findings su...

We propose a mechanism of ultrahigh-Q metallic nanocavity resonances that involves an efficient loss-compensation scheme favorable for room-temperature operation. We theoretically show that surface plasmon-polaritons excited on the entrance and exit interfaces of a metallic nanocavity array efficiently transfer external optical gain to the cavity modes by inducing resonantly-amplified intracavi...
متن کاملSurface-plasmon mode hybridization in subwavelength microdisk lasers
Hybridization of surface-plasmon and dielectric waveguide whispering-gallery modes are demonstrated in a semiconductor microdisk laser cavity of subwavelength proportions. A metal layer is deposited on top of the semiconductor microdisk, the radius of which is systematically varied to enable mode hybridization between surface-plasmon and dielectric modes. The anticrossing behavior of the two ca...
متن کامل“p–n Junction”: Plasmonics Enables Photonic Access to the Nanoworld
Since the development of the light microscope in the 16th century, optical device size and performance have been limited by diffraction. Optoelectronic devices of today are much bigger than the smallest electronic devices for this reason. Achieving control of light–material interactions for photonic device applications at the nanoscale requires structures that guide electromagnetic energy with ...
